Sunday 10th July 2022 – Sunday Service
You’ll have heard that some of us are doing the “Pastoral Principles” course looking at how, as Christians, we are to approach areas where we may disagree. One of the aspects of this is to be aware of “who holds the power” through their role, education, character or any other consideration. The danger is that we may listen to those holding power more than others. Although our society often operates in this way, Christ calls us to a different way of working – that of being a servant. A servant (by definition) is there to attend to the needs of others and not just put forward their point of view. As we see in our reading this week, the disciples struggled with this idea as they were much more concerned about building their own reputation. It’s not an easy call for any of us – being a servant can mean so many things – but one of those is that we listen well to all and not just the “powerful people”.
