When things are tough, do you revert to reliable and predictable things? I know I do! This is exactly what Peter did in today’s reading – he returned to fishing. Peter is experiencing an uncomfortable cocktail of emotions. On the one hand he is joyful that Jesus has risen from death. On the other hand his relationship with Jesus is experienced differently. The risen Jesus appears unpredictable and all their meetings are marred by Peter’s guilt from his denial and betrayal. Peter feels inadequate, he doubts his calling, and compares himself with John. The key question remained: Was Jesus going to take away the responsibility that he had previously given Peter in the light of his failure? Jesus sends a sign, in the form of the empty net and the superabundant catch, to indicate that Peter’s ministry still stands. Before Jesus sends out his disciples, he offers them sustenance with the barbeque on the beach. The Good News is that, when we enter a relationship with Jesus, he loves and accepts us, warts and all! Whatever our mistakes, Jesus offers us help to be the best version of ourselves we can be – the Holy Spirit working within us to enable us to do things we wouldn’t otherwise be capable of doing. Is Jesus interrupting what you are doing and questioning you? For whose sake are you busy? Is Jesus telling you to stop and to let him feed you? Is he saying: “Walk with me and tell me you love me more than these?”
